Overview of the Addressing Tobacco
in Managed Care National Program
From 1997-2005, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
funded a two-part national program, Addressing Tobacco in Managed
Care (ATMC). ATMC’s goal was to evaluate systems-level changes
to improve the delivery of tobacco dependence treatment to members
of managed care plans, and to foster managed care plans’ ability
to deliver such treatments through ongoing technical assistance.
This initiative consisted of a National Program Office co-located
at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Illinois-Chicago
and co-directed by Drs. Michael Fiore and Sue Curry, and a National
Technical Assistance Office located at America’s Health Insurance
Plans (AHIP) and directed by Carmella Bocchino, RN, MBA.
Information on the National Program Office and
findings from ATMC-sponsored research can be found by clicking

The new Addressing Tobacco in Healthcare Research
Network will build upon the accomplishments of ATMC and help to
create new resources to sustain its innovations.
