The specific aim of the project is to develop
and pilot an intervention for primary care practices to enhance
the routine provision of tobacco dependence treatment. The
intervention will be comprised of two elements: academic detailing
and data feedback on tobacco-related measures.
Objectives:
Two practice-based educational sessions
will be developed that focus on office system assessment,
exploration of attitudes and behavior, and problem solving
to enhance the capacity of staff to provide effective tobacco
cessation treatments.
This project will identify tobacco-related
measures generated from office evaluation and MCO administrative
databases, and use this data through provider feedback as
part of the practice intervention. Measures will be analyzed
at the level of the provider as well as the practice; data
reports will be generated by the MMAF with input from primary
care physician study group members. The results of these analyses
will be presented and discussed during the office-based educational
sessions.
We will explore the feasibility of collecting
data at the practice sites, working with each plan to capture
data, compiling multi-plan data on common providers, and employing
a physician study group to critically appraise the data reports.
